A visit to the dentist
Friday, 2 May 2008
My most dreadful visit would be to the dentist. Maybe it is because the sounds and smells bring back memories of bad experiences as a child, or the thought that having treatment will hurt. Dental anxiety or fear of the dentist is a major stumbling block for many people. It usually prevents otherwise intelligent, rational people from optimizing and maintaining their dental health.
Dental techniques have improved so much over the last few years, that modern dental treatment can now be completely painless. Despite this, I still feel a little nervous at the thought of going to the dentist.
The most important step to overcoming dental anxiety is finding a good dentist. A good dentist is one who:
- is patient
- is highly competent
- endeavors to make each meeting pain free
- genuinely cares about you
- has the ability to nurture you through past traumas.
Just in case you want to know, 'scale and polish' is when your teeth require a thorough clean to remove all traces of plaque and tartar. Scaling is used to remove the hard tartar on your teeth, which cannot be removed by simply brushing your teeth.
The dentist used an electric scaler which is use very fast vibration with water. The water is sucked out of my mouth. To polish my teeth, a rotating brush or rubber polisher with toothpaste was used. The polishing stage helps to clean away stains from your teeth, which may have been caused by coffee, tea or red wine.
I have got to admit that after the treatment, I feel relieved and refreshed. It was like the advert "Halls!!!!!" the gula-gula sejuk.

If the dentist pandai buat, memang the gigi can see different tu. But of cos kalau the teeth sdh berlapik2 dia punya tartar...1st visit not really habis kena scaled. Well, not that I ever tried but me MIL was a dental matron, jadi adalah dia cerita2 psl scaling ni.
I once wanted to have my teeth scaled at a local hospital since a friend of mine was a dental nurse there. But she said, no need to scale kalu itu tartar build up ndak telampau serious.
Anyways, Sharon, berapa lah harga one session of scale and polish? - At 3 May 2008 at 22:00, Just plain Sharon said...

hi carol & martin and baby!!
Happy honeymooning dhillon & apip. harap2 jadi lah "baby" sweden kamu ya..ahaks!
chegucarol: the treatment costs between RM40 and above. Depends on your teeth. Kalau smokers lagi tinggi kena charge since the dentist needs more time to scale of the tartar. Have you done yours? - At 4 May 2008 at 21:05, said...

OMG Sharon.. Rm40 kamu bayar! Doii dogo that's cheap! Next time i'll just do it in KK la. Since you & val advocates that Dr. Fiona is good at her work... then i probably will do it once i'm in KK. sini nopo doii dogo isap darah ohhh. We try religiously go & do deep cleaning every 6mths.. but maal oh!! I paid nearly 600rm per session. But of course, the dentist is one of the best. But still... i can do 15X for that price in KK.
