1Borneo Rainforest

I am helping out my SIL to promote her outlet, 1Borneo Rainforest.

With a sprawling 14,000 square feet space, the 1Borneo Rainforest is one venue to be in, delighting all your five senses on the best of Sabah and South East Asia.

The front entrance

The infectious yet unmistakable welcoming melody of the kulintangan welcomes you while been greeted by a Rungus tribe warrior, set the tone for the rest of the cultural journey.

Your first encounter in this cultural village is a hanging bridge. Hanging bridges are iconic landmarks in interior Sabah like the infamous Tamparuli Hanging Bridge. Metaphorically, you are transported from the modern world to an ancient civilization by crossing it. As you stroll upon the bridge, you can’t help but bask under the sunlight that is bursting through the rainforest vegetations while clear water rushes underneath accompanied by an orchestra of jungle sounds echoing in your ears.

The "enchanted" tree

After a brief walk on the hanging bridge, one arrives to the Heritage Galleria displaying an ensemble of traditional costumes, artifacts, music instruments of the various ethnic groups of Sabah. The Galleria also features wedding procession of each ethnic group on a rotational basis, which is more intricate and educational than one’s usual nuptials.

The piéce de rèsistance of the cultural voyage would certainly be the kampung or village lifestyle segment. Here, one can observe kampung folks running their regular chores like feeding chickens, sweeping the floor with lidi broom, playing gasing, dehusking paddy stalks and many more. If you have never fed a life egg bearing chicken before, this is the moment to experience it hands-on.

Get into the groove as you ensue to the traditional performance arena. A selected ethnic group performs their indigenous dance and rituals ranging from thanksgiving to post-harvesting to warriors dance. To fully experience this adventure, you are invited to join in the fun.

Now that you have feasted your eyes on the kaleidoscope of colours, textures, sounds and movements of Sabah, it is time to delight your tastebuds into the state’s authentic traditional gastronomy wonder. Savour hinava, a refreshing raw fish salad, spicy beef rendang and toast to a great cultural experience with native rice wine called lihing. In addition, impress your folks back at home by learning to prepare these dishes through a live cooking demonstration.

The journey continues to the longhouses, another familiar sight of Borneo. This dwelling houses an array of exhibitions displaying craftsmanship of Asia. Expect to see batik painting, songket weaving, rattan basket making, jewellery beading, wood works and pottery all under one roof. Try your hands on these crafts while skillful artisans demonstrate the fine art of Asia.

A trip to Sabah would not be complete without getting a memento and you will be spoilt for choices in 1Borneo Rainforest. From a traditional beaded necklace, luxurious table runner to a hand-sculpted vase, one simply cannot return back to the concrete jungle without obtaining any souvenirs that ranges from Sabah’s finest to the rest of South East Asia.
